Today, she's on no wine-tasting escapade. The bar has a comfortable atmosphere, yet it's missing something that she can't quite point out. The room is filled with a soft, jazzy beat that makes her feel like she's in a secret agent movie. The bartender is floating vodka on some strawberry juice for her. For the first time in a long while, she has the weekend free. So what, pray tell, could be wrong? She leans forward, resting her chin atop the back of her hand.

It's kind of boring to drink alone, isn't it?

Erin subconsciously turns towards the general direction of the door just in time to see a new arrival. There, a familiar face. She has to put in a little effort to remember his name, considering she hasn't seen the man in over a year now. An expression washes over his face, probably as perplexed as she herself feels.

She smiles. "Long time no see, Mr. Daniel's."

That's not his real name, of course she knows. Just her own little nickname, borrowed from the whiskey brand he'd been drinking the first time she met him in a bar. Her smile doesn't falter.

There were times that he had to unwind and drink hard. Seeing as he was working from the Headquarters today, it was going to take too much time to fly out to Rustboro to knock off for a few hours—by the time he would’ve arrived at the Stray he would be too tired to even function and might end up crashing at the bar.

And he didn’t want to do that in front of his boyfriend!

So he’d made up his mind to go to one of the local watering holes around Lilycove after he’d finished the nightmarish pile of paperwork for the day. Thank hell things are quiet… for now. For now, he added to himself a few moments later.

Was he—was he seeing things? There was someone familiar sitting at the bar, and wow—had it really been more than a year since they last met?

“Heh, really?” he said back in greeting as he ran his hand through his hair. Finding a vacant spot at the bar, he ambled over right to where she was seated and parked right there.

“Sure, as long as you’re paying,” he snarked back with a cheeky grin on his face.

She grins back. "I'll pay for anything that's not a Jack Daniel's. Take your pick." She has nothing against whiskey, really. It may not be her favorite drink, but it's not a bad one. The man really just needed a little more variety in his drinking history.

Sure, Erin is glad to have someone to accompany her for a while. Beyond that, though? She sees a clear change in him, from the way he walks to the way he smiles, and she can't help but comment on it. "You're looking better than last time."

“You’re going to call me boring, but—“ he gestured as the bartender came over to take his order.

“A straight dirty martini,” he said once the ‘tender was close enough, who then shuffled away to assemble his drink.

“Yeah, I am so stereotypical with the drinks. I would normally knock off with a Long Island but I figured, I needed something harder this evening. Paperwork is a pain in the ass, as usual,” he grunted as he finally relaxed his tense shoulders.

“So—where have you been? More than a year’s passed and I only see you turn up again just now—did you run away with someone?” he joked a few moments later.

well he went with something simple at least!

Whether disappointed or amused or anything else, she doesn't show it. Her hand slides farther up the sides of her face til it reaches her temple, and it stays there, holding her head up sideways. "Is that so? Must be pretty hard on you, looking over paperwork until this late." Though they never really discussed their jobs before, Erin hasn't been blind to the many news articles subtly or not so subtly mentioning his name as he rose in the League's ranks. Rather than bring it up, though, she takes the chance to talk about herself instead. Let him reveal as much or as little as he wishes.

"How sweet that would have been," she laughs at the joke. It really would have been sweet, as well as preposterous if it had been anything but a joke. "No, I've just been really focused on my job. Moving for projects here and there. Consulting work never gives you a break." In that sense, she supposes she must be tired, just like Lars. She raises her glass to him just as the bartender slides his finished martini. "For our good work," and she finishes her mix of bourbon and Cointreau with one last gulp.

In Erin's eyes, spending nights finishing a tricky process or waking up early in the morning with a brilliant idea that helps move everything forward, they're all joys that only her career can give her. She doesn't regret them. But still she drinks and orders another glass of the same.

"They call it side truck. Weird name for a drink, isn't it? But it's good. On the rocks, to help with the maddening summer heat. Give it a try after your martini, tab's still on me."

He chuckled—at least the humor wasn’t lost on her.

“Aw, and here I was thinking you’d found yourself a nice man—or a nice lady, if that’s how you swing,” he chuckled as the dirty martini was slid his way, with the little garnish right down the middle.

“Cheers,” he added as he swilled the glass for a few moments before plucking out the garnish and downing the drink in one go. The olive followed not too long after, and eventually the emptied glass was slid back towards the ‘tender, who blinked at him like he’d lost his mind.

Either way…

“Let me try that, the side truck,” he gestured. “Her recommendation,” he went on a few moments later. Turning to her, he chuckled again.

“Such a strange name for an unusual drink. I’ll be the judge of that.”
